Stunning. The service was immaculate. We had game drives in the morning then in the afternoon. Our Ranger Reinhard was amazing, he went above and beyond on our game drives while respecting the animals. He really made the experiences unforgettable. We were treated like family and every day they exceeded our expectations with surprises of where we would have dinner. It really was wonderful, and romantic. We would love to return.

One of my top experiences of all time! The location is magical, with the lodge situation atop a hill overlooking the reserve. The animals are plentiful, spotted with the expert skill of the guides. The hospitality is exceptional: the amenities of a 5 star resort, while feeling comfortable as if you're visiting the home of a dear friend. Would absolutely return!

We were the first time in South Africa and the first time doing Safari. If we ever go again, we will go to Makumu. The people there, the service, the warm welcome and the food couldn‘t be better. The Game Drives were very exciting and the Tracker and Guide did their very best. If you need time to calm down, get into a complete other world and you‘re good with familiar treatment in a Hotel, you must choose Makumu.

Tracking Giants: The Walking Safaris at Makumu

There is a special kind of excitement that comes from stepping into the African bush on foot. Every rustle in the grass, every bird call overhead, and every fresh track in the sand becomes part of the story.

At Makumu, a walking safari is more than an activity, it is an invitation to experience the wilderness as it has been known for centuries: one step at a time.

Unlike a traditional game drive, a walking safari slows the pace and heightens the senses. Without the familiar comfort of a vehicle, guests become keenly aware of the intricate rhythms of the bush.

The texture of the earth beneath your boots, the fragrance of wild sage carried on the breeze, and the distant call of a fish eagle all contribute to a richer understanding of the landscape and its inhabitants.

The true artistry of a walking safari lies in the skill of the guides. Trained trackers read the stories written in the sand, interpreting footprints, broken branches, and subtle changes in animal behaviour.

Their knowledge ensures not only an extraordinary experience but also a safe one, allowing guests to appreciate the remarkable lives of Africa’s wildlife with confidence and respect.

Seeing iconic species such as elephants or buffalo on foot is exhilarating. These encounters are never rushed or intrusive, rather, they inspire humility and awe. Standing quietly in the presence of such magnificent animals reveals just how interconnected all life in the bush truly is.

Guests often discover that what begins as an adventure quickly becomes a lesson in patience, awareness, and conservation.

Long after the walk has ended, the memories remain. A walking safari at Makumu offers more than thrilling sightings, it creates a lasting bond with the natural world and a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance that sustains it.

For those seeking an authentic and unforgettable way to experience the African wilderness, tracking giants on foot is an adventure unlike any other.
