MEANING OF MAKUMU

In the Xitsonga language, the word “Makumu” refers to an intangible explanation of an open space, an uncluttered lookout over distant horizons, or endless views. The breathtaking views and location of the lodge complement a deeply inspiring sense of space and place, leaving visitors rejuvenated with the ancient spirit of African wilderness.

ABOUT US

OUR STORY

Makumu is more than a place — it’s the realisation of an African dream. Set in the heart of the expansive 60,000-hectare Klaserie Private Nature Reserve outside Hoedspruit, South Africa, Makumu Private Game Lodge is a luxurious home away from home, designed to immerse every guest in the spirit of the African wilderness.

The story of Makumu begins with its founder, Stefan Breuer — known by many as the “Barefoot Bushman.” From a young age Stefan felt a deep connection to Africa’s wild spaces. Over many years of visiting and embracing the landscape, he came to understand that freedom and authenticity weren’t just experiences — they were ways of being.

Stefan’s dream was simple yet profound: to create a sanctuary that celebrates the warmth, textures and soul of Africa while offering a deeply personal, authentic safari experience. Every decision in designing the lodge — from the warm earthy colours and rich materials to the open views and culturally inspired rooms — reflects his vision of what Makumu should be: a place where guests feel at home in the bush.

Makumu isn’t just about luxury — it’s about connection, respect and presence. Here, guests don’t merely visit; they engage with the land, the wildlife, and the stories of those who call this place home. Each sunrise, every whisper of the bush, and every encounter with the wild echoes the values that guide this lodge.

Today, Makumu stands as a testament to Stefan’s vision — a sanctuary where the magic of Africa is felt deeply, where comfort meets wilderness, and where every guest becomes part of a story that continues to unfold.
