Highlights

THE HOME OF ENDLESS VIEWS

In the Xitsonga language, the word “Makumu” refers to an intangible explanation of an open space, an uncluttered lookout over distant horizons, or endless views. The breathtaking views and location of the lodge complement a deeply inspiring sense of space and place, leaving visitors rejuvenated with the ancient spirit of African wilderness.

ACCOMMODATION

Suites

Makumu Private Game Lodge is perched high on a hill, offering uninterrupted views over the surrounding bushveld. Intimate and exclusive, the lodge features just six luxurious suites, accommodating up to twelve guests in complete comfort, style and privacy. Inspired by the rich heritage of Africa’s tribes, each suite has its own distinctive character. Makumu offers three King Suites and three Impi Suites, with each pair thoughtfully themed around the Bushman, Ndebele and Zulu tribes of South Africa. The result is a stay that feels deeply rooted in place, where contemporary luxury meets authentic African design.

Stunning. The service was immaculate. We had game drives in the morning then in the afternoon. Our Ranger Reinhard was amazing, he went above and beyond on our game drives while respecting the animals. He really made the experiences unforgettable. We were treated like family and every day they exceeded our expectations with surprises of where we would have dinner. It really was wonderful, and romantic. We would love to return.

Makumu is a little paradise on earth. Everything is beautiful, neat, comfortable. The bush experience is complete and immersive. The lodge itself is superb, with breathtaking views of the savannah and animals, visible from the terrace and even from the rooms. All meals are prepared on site and homemade.

Excellent! The staff are very welcoming and attentive!

This place is truly special. It feels like a family home, a luxurious one in the middle of the African bush. The interior is truly African and very tasteful. Everything is spotlessly clean. The food is very good. The service excellent. The safari tours (happening twice a day) are well organised and professional. The ranger can literally answer any questions you might have about flora and fauna. Their expertise makes you feel very safe, and the vehicles are in top shape. All in all it could not have been any better. Recommend a stay of at least 4 nights.

The first time we visited Makumu was in 2022. What a beautiful place. Last September 2025 we went back. And yes, the vibe was still there. A home away from home, in the middle of the Klaserie. The rooms are specious and luxury, the staff is amazing and the game drives are out of this world.

You want to see the big 5? Makumu is the place! We love Makumu and it will always have a special place in our hearts.

We were the first timers in South Africa and it was the first time doing a Safari. If we ever go again, we will go to Makumu. The people there, the service, the warm welcome and the food couldn‘t be better. The Game Drives were very exciting and the Tracker and Guide did their very best. If you need time to calm down, get into a completely other world and you‘re good with familiar treatment in a Hotel, you must choose Makumu.

Makumu is in an exclusive league of its own.

The lodge, the location, the incredible staff and their exceptional service. The game drives are exceptional as we are alone and can spend real time with the animals without the next jeep coming up behind us.
We came for the second time and brought friends for their first visit and we all loved it.

What an experience. Loved the service from the transfer from the airport for the entire stay. Food and service was outstanding. Our drive from the airport to the hotel was notable we saw elephants and buffalo. During our stay at the Makumu we saw rhino, elephants , giraffe, buffalo, lioness, and her beautiful three cubs, various bucks, birdlife. Highlight for me was seeing a Leopard twice. Rooms are beautifully decorated and so much beautiful candlelight to light up our nights.

    What a wonderful experience!

The staff is so friendly and attentive, the food is delicious, and the game drives were amazing. We saw the Big 5 in two drives!

They even helped my daughter’s boyfriend with his engagement plans and it was beautiful! I’d love to return to Makumu!
