Stunning. The service was immaculate. We had game drives in the morning then in the afternoon. Our Ranger Reinhard was amazing, he went above and beyond on our game drives while respecting the animals. He really made the experiences unforgettable. We were treated like family and every day they exceeded our expectations with surprises of where we would have dinner. It really was wonderful, and romantic. We would love to return.

One of my top experiences of all time! The location is magical, with the lodge situation atop a hill overlooking the reserve. The animals are plentiful, spotted with the expert skill of the guides. The hospitality is exceptional: the amenities of a 5 star resort, while feeling comfortable as if you're visiting the home of a dear friend. Would absolutely return!

We were the first time in South Africa and the first time doing Safari. If we ever go again, we will go to Makumu. The people there, the service, the warm welcome and the food couldn‘t be better. The Game Drives were very exciting and the Tracker and Guide did their very best. If you need time to calm down, get into a complete other world and you‘re good with familiar treatment in a Hotel, you must choose Makumu.

Spring Renewal: When the Bush Comes Alive Again

There’s a particular magic that descends on the Klaserie as winter retreats. The air begins to warm, the first rains arrive, and the landscape that has been golden and austere for months suddenly stirs to life.

Spring in the bush is not subtle: it’s a transformation that unfolds daily, touching everything from the smallest shoots to the largest animals. For those on safari in spring, it’s a chance to witness nature at its most generative moment.

A New Season in the Bush

After the dry winter months, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve begins to enter a season of noticeable change. As the season progresses, warmer temperatures and the arrival of rain begin to reshape the land. The first rains (sometimes just a whisper of moisture, sometimes heavy downpours) trigger a cascade of responses across the ecosystem.

For returning visitors, this transformation is striking. The contrast is impossible to miss: the muted golds and browns of winter give way to a landscape painted in fresh greens. Trees that seemed dormant suddenly express themselves. The bush, which can feel open and sparse in winter, begins to fill with fresh growth. It’s a different world entirely, even if you’re standing in the same place.

For those experiencing a Klaserie safari for the first time during this season, spring presents the bush as a place of endless possibility and activity.

A Season for New Life

Spring in the Klaserie brings something that captivates every safari enthusiast: the sight of young animals. Across the reserve, the arrival of spring can bring an abundance of young animals. Young antelope appear, their legs impossibly long and uncertain. Calves stay close to their mothers, still learning the rhythms of survival. Young animals of various species can be seen exploring, playing, and gradually becoming bolder and more independent.

The behaviour you might witness is endlessly compelling. A mother keeping a watchful eye over her calf. A group of young herbivores playing, running, bucking, testing their growing strength. The tentative first grazes of an infant herbivore. Young animals discovering their environment, step by step.

It’s important to remember that every safari is different. Wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable, shaped by the animals’ own movements and choices. There’s no guarantee of seeing any particular species or behaviour on any particular drive. But during spring, there can be increased opportunities to encounter young animals across multiple safaris, and the energy and vitality they bring to the land is unmistakable.

The Return of the Birds

As the season warms, the Klaserie comes alive with sound. Many migratory bird species return to the region as the warmer season brings changing conditions and renewed food sources. The increased bird activity creates a completely different acoustic landscape.

Where the bush in winter can be quiet, spring fills with bird calls. Some are subtle, others are dramatic and impossible to miss. The return of migratory species adds to the activity, while resident birds such as the Lilac-breasted Roller, African Fish Eagle, Black-crowned Tchagra and Bateleur bring colour and character to the landscape. Southern Carmine Bee-eaters add flashes of vivid colour, while kingfishers, sunbirds, weavers and hornbills can be spotted around water sources and the vegetation surrounding the lodge.

For birding enthusiasts and photographers, spring is particularly rewarding. Species that are absent during the cooler months return, expanding the possibilities for observation and documentation. The changing bird populations mean the sounds and sights of the bush shift noticeably from week to week.

The returning birds are one of many seasonal signs that the ecosystem is responding to warmer temperatures, rainfall and renewed food sources. Their return is one of the many seasonal signs that the bush is responding to the changing conditions.

Spring on Safari at Makumu

Back at the lodge, the guest experience shifts with the season. As spring approaches, the sun rises earlier than it does during winter, bringing more light to the bush earlier in the morning. This can influence the timing and atmosphere of early-morning game drives, with the changing light illuminating the increasingly green vegetation as the day begins. The cooler early hours can offer opportunities to observe animals as they move through the changing landscape.

Between major sightings, there are the smaller moments that make spring safaris distinctive. A trail of fresh tracks across the sand: evidence of animals that moved during the night or early morning.

The appeal of a spring safari lies in experiencing the bush as it transforms rather than simply collecting sightings. The season rewards attention. It rewards sitting quietly and observing the smallest details. It rewards noticing how the light falls differently, how animal behaviour responds to changing conditions, and how the whole landscape shifts from day to day.

Witness the Renewal

Spring represents a fresh chapter for the Klaserie. From the first green shoots to the abundance of young animals, from the return of migratory birds to the subtle shifts in predator-prey dynamics, the landscape becomes increasingly active and alive.

It’s a season that rewards observation, patience, and a genuine curiosity about how ecosystems transform. It’s a time when the bush is generous with its changes, visible and audible and unmistakable.

If you’ve ever wondered what the Klaserie looks like when it’s at its most vital, when renewal is the dominant force and the bush is teeming with new life, spring is your answer. Come experience the seasonal transformation. Witness the bush as it comes alive again. Watch the landscape rewrite itself week by week, and discover why spring safaris in South Africa hold a unique and enduring appeal.

At Makumu, spring offers an invitation to slow down, look closer and experience the Klaserie as it changes.
