Stunning. The service was immaculate. We had game drives in the morning then in the afternoon. Our Ranger Reinhard was amazing, he went above and beyond on our game drives while respecting the animals. He really made the experiences unforgettable. We were treated like family and every day they exceeded our expectations with surprises of where we would have dinner. It really was wonderful, and romantic. We would love to return.

One of my top experiences of all time! The location is magical, with the lodge situation atop a hill overlooking the reserve. The animals are plentiful, spotted with the expert skill of the guides. The hospitality is exceptional: the amenities of a 5 star resort, while feeling comfortable as if you're visiting the home of a dear friend. Would absolutely return!

We were the first time in South Africa and the first time doing Safari. If we ever go again, we will go to Makumu. The people there, the service, the warm welcome and the food couldn‘t be better. The Game Drives were very exciting and the Tracker and Guide did their very best. If you need time to calm down, get into a complete other world and you‘re good with familiar treatment in a Hotel, you must choose Makumu.

Dry Season — A Look Into Our Tribal Suites & Season Benefits

As the African bush transforms beneath the soft glow of the dry season, a different kind of magic comes alive at Makumu Private Game Lodge.

The land opens up, wildlife thrives around dwindling waterholes, and every game drive promises breathtaking encounters. Pair this with our intimate and beautifully themed Tribal Suites, and you have the makings of an unforgettable safari.

Join us as we take a closer look at the dry season experience at Makumu and why now is the perfect time to escape to the wild.

Setting the Scene: The Dry Season at Makumu

From May through September, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve enters its dry season. Days are warm and crisp, nights are clear under a canopy of stars, and the air carries the earthy scent of the savannah.

During these months, the thinning vegetation makes it easier to spot wildlife, while animals gravitate towards the few remaining water sources, often within close proximity to Makumu itself.

Whether it’s elephants browsing near your suite or lions resting beneath a lone acacia, the dry season offers unparalleled moments of intimacy with the wild.

The Unique Tribal Suites Experience

At the heart of your stay is our collection of six individually designed Tribal Suites. Inspired by the artistry and culture of Southern Africa’s indigenous tribes (Bushman, Ndebele, and Zulu) each suite tells its own story through handcrafted décor, intricate textiles, and natural materials.

Designed for harmony with the environment, every suite offers:

  • En-suite bathrooms with indoor showers and outdoor showers are located along the pathway to the suites.
  • Private decks with hammocks in the King Suites, perfect for a midday rest.
  • Expansive views of the surrounding bushveld

With only 12 guests hosted at a time, your stay is assured to be both private and deeply personal.

Dry Season Benefits at Makumu

Visiting during the dry season brings with it a wealth of advantages:

  • Prime Wildlife Viewing: Sparse bush and low grass make it easier to track and observe game, from majestic elephants to elusive leopards.
  • Incredible Predator Activity: With prey animals clustering near water, predator sightings (particularly lions and wild dogs) become more frequent.
  • Exceptional Photography: The clarity of the light and the absence of haze result in breathtaking photographic opportunities.
  • Bush Walks and ‘iThumbela’ Bunker: The dry season is ideal for on-foot safaris and time spent in our sunken photographic bunker, where you can capture wildlife from a unique, eye-level perspective.
  • Perfect Weather: Crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and mild evenings make for comfortable drives, bush dinners, and outdoor relaxation.

How the Tribal Suites Complement the Dry Season Experience

There is something incredibly special about waking in a Tribal Suite during the dry season

The cool, fragrant mornings invite you to open your doors and watch the sunrise across the open veld.

From your private deck, you may spot giraffes gracefully moving through the brush or hear the distant call of hyenas at dawn.

And because Makumu is unfenced, it is not uncommon for wildlife to meander near the lodge, particularly during the dry season, when animals seek out nearby water sources.

A Sustainable and Authentic Safari

At Makumu, we remain committed to eco-conscious hospitality. Our lodge is fully solar-powered, and fresh purified water is drawn sustainably from boreholes.

This alignment with nature ensures that during the dry season, when every resource in the bush becomes more precious, you can witness the authentic rhythms of the wild while knowing that your footprint is gentle.

Voices From Our Guests

“Staying in the Zulu Suite during the dry season was an absolute dream. The wildlife sightings were constant. One afternoon we watched a whole herd of elephants from our deck! The stillness of the bush at night was something I’ll never forget.”

“Incredible photography! The light, the animals around the lodge, the views from the iThumbela bunker. Absolutely worth coming in the dry months.”
