Stunning. The service was immaculate. We had game drives in the morning then in the afternoon. Our Ranger Reinhard was amazing, he went above and beyond on our game drives while respecting the animals. He really made the experiences unforgettable. We were treated like family and every day they exceeded our expectations with surprises of where we would have dinner. It really was wonderful, and romantic. We would love to return.

One of my top experiences of all time! The location is magical, with the lodge situation atop a hill overlooking the reserve. The animals are plentiful, spotted with the expert skill of the guides. The hospitality is exceptional: the amenities of a 5 star resort, while feeling comfortable as if you're visiting the home of a dear friend. Would absolutely return!

We were the first time in South Africa and the first time doing Safari. If we ever go again, we will go to Makumu. The people there, the service, the warm welcome and the food couldn‘t be better. The Game Drives were very exciting and the Tracker and Guide did their very best. If you need time to calm down, get into a complete other world and you‘re good with familiar treatment in a Hotel, you must choose Makumu.

A 7 Step Guide to Safari Photography: Capturing the Wild Moments at Makumu

Embarking on a safari adventure of any kind is a thrilling and anticipating journey for any visitor attending Makumu Private Game Lodge. But for wildlife and nature photographers specifically, it takes on a whole new meaning…
The location of the lodge in the beautiful Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, is where untamed landscapes and diverse wildlife converge, presenting a unique opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture the raw beauty of the wild.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the intricacies of safari photography, providing you with essential tips and tricks to immortalize the mesmerizing moments that unfold in the heart of the wilderness.

1)     CHOOSE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

Safari photography demands the right gear to ensure you don’t miss out on any exceptional shots. Invest in a reliable DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens to capture animals from a distance. Additionally, don’t forget essentials like a sturdy tripod and lens cleaning kit.

2)     UNDERSTAND YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Familiarize yourself with the unique characteristics of Makumu’s landscape. Whether it’s the seasonal changes of the bush, lush vegetation, or dramatic sunsets, understanding your surroundings allows you to anticipate and capture the essence of the wilderness.

3)     MASTER THE ART OF COMPOSITION

Composing a compelling shot is crucial in safari photography. Use the rule of thirds to place your subject off-center, creating a more dynamic and visually pleasing image. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to add depth to your photos.

4)     FOCUS ON WILDLIFE BEHAVIOUR

Patience is key when photographing wildlife. Observe animal behavior to anticipate their movements and actions. Capturing a lion’s yawn or a herd of elephants at a watering hole requires keen attention and a readiness to click the shutter at just the right moment. Our Ranger Diaries series (link to YouTube) now provide you with extended video footage of wildlife behavior that may help you to understand the animals habits.

5)     OPTIMIZE CAMERA SETTINGS

Safari conditions can be challenging, with varying light and unpredictable animal movements. Adjust your camera settings accordingly, utilizing a fast shutter speed to freeze action and a higher ISO to compensate for low light conditions. Experiment with aperture settings to achieve the desired depth of field.

6)     BE MINDFUL OF YOUR IMPACT

While capturing breathtaking moments, it’s essential to prioritize the well-being of the animals and their environment. Respect the guidelines set by Makumu’s conservation efforts and maintain a safe distance from the wildlife to avoid disrupting their natural behaviour and habitat. Our Photographic Bunker (link the bunker from website would be the perfect spot in a case like this, providing you with a safe and secure location and guaranteed to get you those perfect shots.
