Tourism Update: Private Lodge Opens Photo Bunker
Makumu Private Game Lodge in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, has opened a photography bunker for up-close viewing of wildlife.
‘iThumbela’ (Xitsonga for ‘place to hide’) is built into the ground beside a watering hole 20 minutes from the lodge. The bunker’s windows allow visitors to be able to view the wildlife.
Guests can also book a private photographic safari, along with exclusive access to the bunker, which is accessible via a small staircase and houses drinks, stools and a couch.
“The bunker is eco-friendly and made from a submerged, camouflaged container, so as not to disturb the surrounding fauna and flora,” says the owner of Makumu Lodge, Stefan Breuer.
Makumu Private Game Lodge is in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, part of the greater Kruger National Park. At 60 000 ha, it is one of the biggest privately owned nature reserves in South Africa.
